چکیده

In the early decades of the Space Age, a great deal of work was put into the development of the Colloid Thruster as an electric propulsion system for spacecraft. In spite of the effort by the end of the 70s the programs were stopped in the USA and Europe before any design had gotten to fly in space. An exhaustive study of the literature has been performed to identify what were the reasons behind the disappearance of Colloid Thrusters. Apart from programmatic reasons related to the introduction of the Space Shuttle, some technical reasons where identified. The technical difficulties had to do with the use of arrays of needles. Aiming at overcoming these difficulties, an alternative way to construct Colloid Thrusters has been proposed. Instead of needles, holes in Teflon where used. This has been tested both numerically and experimentally with positive results. This development may be useful not only for colloid propulsion but also for other technologies that require electrospray emission. Thesis Supervisor: Manuel Martinez Sanchez Title: Professor

A Centennial Review of Sub-sonic Transport Aircraft

From Wright Brothers 1903 to present day 2003, aeronautical technology has made a profound progress. This paper demonstrates the outcome of this progress in weight, wing area, and engine thrust in three categories of transport aircraft of short to long range, regional jets, and turbo-prop commuter aircraft. Also the paper includes those aircraft with distinct jump in aeronautical technology. Fe...

Progress Towards a Miniaturized Electrospray Thruster for Flexible Propulsion of Small Spacecraft

Miniaturized electrical thrusters based on electrospray (or colloid) emitters could revolutionize the spacecraft industry by providing e cient propulsion capabilities to micro and nano satellites (1-100 kg). We report on our recent advances in the development of this technology within the MicroThrust (www.microthrust.eu) European consortium. We present the design and operation of the currently ...

Performance Studies of a Colloid Thruster System

Preliminary results are presented, of measurements of thrust (T) and specific impulse (Isp), produced by a single emitter prototype colloid propulsion system. The development of the colloid thruster propulsion package at Stanford University is in preparation for flighttesting on a 20-kg university nanosatellite, to be launched in 2003. The half-kilogram Colloid Micro Thruster (CMT) package meas...

Nodular colloid milium of the ears

Colliod milium is a degenerative change, which is characterized clinically by development of multiple yellowish, translucent papules and nodules on the light exposed skin and histologically by the presence of colloid in the dermal papillae. This is a rare condition and has some variants. We report a case of colloid millium with nodular and plaque lesions on his ears. Our patient was a far...

Enhanced active motion of Janus colloids at the water surface.

We have investigated the active motion of self-propelled colloids confined at the air-water interface and explored the possibility of enhancing the directional motion of self-propelled Janus colloids by slowing down their rotational diffusion. The two dimensional motion of micron-sized silica-platinum Janus colloids has been experimentally measured by particle tracking video-microscopy at incre...
